Who is Daniel Mills?

I became the first specialist in veterinary behavioural medicine to be individual to be recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons(RCVS) in 2004, and in the same year became Europe’s first professor of Veterinary Behavioural Medicine. In 2016 I was further recognised by RCVS as the first individual to be granted Fellowship status for his contributions to this field. In 2026, I was listed in the top 25 of veterinary scientists in the world (covering all disciplines) by Stanford University’s list of the top cited scientists in the world.

I am passionate about companion animal behaviour and human animal relationships, having a uniquely strong set of both practical and academic skills that I share to help others improve their skills and relationships. I also enjoy promoting reflection on how the processes I research can potentially provide insights into human mental health (evolutionary psychiatry).

Lifetime Contribution

I have pioneered a scientific transformation of our understanding of companion animal problem behaviour, through the development of a “psychobiological approach” to clinical animal behaviour assessment. I have published more than 250 full peer-reviewed scientific articles and more than 60 books and chapters. I have supervised more than 40 post graduate research students (mainly PhDs) to successful completion, and taught thousands of students from all over the world since moving into academia in 1994. I have also helped thousands of owners through my role as behaviour clinician and Director of the University of Lincoln Animal Behaviour Clinic up until my retirement in 2026. I run the audio and YouTube channel “What makes you click?”, which includes unique insights into clinical animal behaviour, including the series focusing on owners’ experience of problem pet ownership “Pet Behaviour Odysseys” (https://www.facebook.com/dsmpod) and their route to a more fulfilling and healthy relationship.
